About Unicorn to Phoenix

This is the journal of James Mayes. I sold my last firm to a US unicorn, was about to launch a new startup and was then diagnosed with a Brain tumour. I need to Phoenix from the ashes of that diagnosis, win this battle and launch that firm.

This is a space where I can process my emotions, keep friends around the world updated, and share what I learn as a travel this path. I’m researching constantly and finding things that might help me win. I also have some great people on hand to help me learn. If I can help a few others on this path too, that helps bring a little positivity into an otherwise tough journey.

I find cooking therapeutic and I’m aware of more and more research into which foods might have properties that slow cancer growth or even induce cancer cell death. It’s obviously in my best interests to learn about this stuff and I’ll be sharing much of it here. I am NOT in any way medically or nutritionally trained though, so if you see something you like the look of, do your own research too, or better still ask your medical team if you’re currently in any kind of treatment or on medication. Don’t consider this site to be answers, use if more as signposts that might take you in a useful direction you hadn’t previously considered, but be sure to check the road before you travel it!

My personal journal as I battle a brain tumour while publishing my first book & launching a new startup. I aim to share what I learn & help other patients while also processing my own journey.

I work at the intersection of content, product, community and events. In January 2024, I was about to raise a round for new startup, when I was diagnosed with an Astrocytoma brain tumour. This is the story of how I'm doing and how I'll win!
